5 months ago yesterday, I was on a plane.
I was suspended in air, roots planted nowhere. Behind me, growing farther by the moment, was Ecuador: the only place I knew to call home. Texas was in front of me, a new, strange adventure: exciting, but also terrifying.
Several weeks before that, though, I had come to an agreement with God about this adventure. I was afraid of the change and newness of leaving home, and I was afraid of not having any friends. And yet I knew that in God’s word, He promised to always be with me, and take care of me.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.
Rom. 8:28
Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
Matt. 28:20

And so I dared God to keep His promise.
Basically, I said, “I’d like to see You do it…If You can take me from being scared and knowing almost nobody to having friends and a home in Lubbock, then I’ll know that you can and will do it again.”
And from that point on, I became much more excited for my upcoming trip, expectant to see how God would keep his promise.

He did!
(Of course, I’m sure you guessed that already.)
There have been many opportunities to visit and get to know people: a young adults’ Bible study every Friday during the school year: prayer meeting Wednesday evenings & before breaking of bread Sunday mornings… Bible study in Spanish Sunday evenings… playing “Wally-ball” (a cross between volleyball and racquetball) most Sunday and Wednesday evenings after Spanish Bible study and prayer meeting, respectively… going out for lunch with the young people Sundays after church… getting together for movie nights at people’s houses…
…The Lassiters are my second family.
In short, I have been very blessed by the friendliness and love of the church here in Lubbock, and can say with conviction that God has kept His promise. He has given me friends and a home where I used to be a stranger.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

“I do set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the earth.”
